One of the country's finest choirs , the Thomas Tallis Society - which celebrated its 40th anniversy in 2004- takes its name from the 16th century composer who worked at the Greenwich Royal Court and is buried in the Parish Church of St Alfege.

Its founder Philip Simms, was organist and choirmaster at the church from 1964 to 2000, and still continues to direct his Tallis Chamber Choir.

Stephen Dagg, the present organist of St Alfege, took over as Director of TTS in 2006. Stephen has worked alongside Philip Simms for many years and conducted a number of recent TTS concerts. He is Director of The Centre for Young Musicians at Morley College, London.

Fortuitously comprising around forty voices, The Thomas Tallis Society continues to give four or five concerts a year in St Alfege or the Old Royal Naval College Chapel, and to take part in local Festivals. The choir is often invited to sing at other London venues.

Although many Thomas Tallis Society members live locally to Greenwich, the Society attracts musicians from all over London. Singers and orchestral players of a high standard are always welcome to audition and should contact the Secretary for further details. A high standard of sight-reading is required, since the choir works on a few condensed rehearsals in Greenwich before each concert.
